A Cosy Child-Pleasant Keep at The Montagu Arms

| Everyday Luxury Travel UK

I absolutely love having Noah as my little travel buddy and I’m so happy to be able to take him on little trips. Our latest adventure was to a gorgeous country house hotel called the Montagu Arms in Beaulieu in the New Forest. How beautiful is the wisteria-covered facade of this charming hotel?
We were very lucky to have a day of beautiful weather and as soon as Noah and I arrived we met with Theresa for a glass of wine in the hotel’s sun-drenched garden. The garden is an absolute highlight of the hotel and we sat on the terrace enjoying our rosé surrounded by flowers listening to the gentle trickle of the fountain.
There’s a kitchen garden just behind serving the hotel’s two restaurants and in the greenhouses grow artichokes, beetroots, carrots and lettuce. Guests are very much encouraged to explore and enjoy the garden!

There are 33 bedrooms in this cosy bijou hotel with the rooms in the main house offering a traditional feel and newer rooms in the Courtyard. We were lucky enough to have a room in the newly refurbished courtyard, accessed from the hotel’s terrace via wisteria trellises. Our Courtyard Retreat room was incredibly spacious, perfect with little Noahand the soaring high ceilings made the room feel even bigger! The rooms are actually within the original chauffeur garages at the hotel and each has a different design. A cot had been placed for Noah but it’s also possible to change the sofa into a bed for two children who can stay completely free of charge.

The room itself is gorgeous with sunny colours and porcelain lemons giving some Amalfi vibes in the New Forest! There’s complimentary seasonal gin, a nespresso machine and big screen tv. We loved the fact that our room also had it’s own semi-private terrace.

The bathrooms is huge with marble fittings, a free standing bath, large rain shower and lovely White Company goodies!
The interior of the hotel is totally old school British charm – think wood panelling, grandfather clocks, cosy armchairs and cushions to sinks into! There’s a lounge, bar and conservatory so no shortage of areas to relax in.

Location-wise the Montagu Arms is perfect. We took a walk around Beaulieu village with it’s adorable thatched cottages and local shops. The hotel is right by Beaulieu river too. Of course, the New Forest is known for being home to ponies, but we bumped into a herd of local donkeys too!
We were booked in for dinner at Monty’s Inn, the hotel’s onsite pub!
Monty’s has a light, fresh and modern feel to it and is very family-friendly. They had already set up our table with a highchair when we arrived and there’s  kids menu too. As you can see in the below picture, dogs are most welcome too.

British cuisine and pub classics are on the menu here and we very much enjoyed our food which included wild garlic and pumpkin seed hummus, breaded goats cheese with dressed rocket and onion chilli chutney for starters. I had whole-roasted bream with saute potatoes for my main course and sirloin steak with fries for Theresa. I ordered pasta from the kids menu for Noah. Desserts were chocolate brownie and creme brulee.

The hotel’s Terrace Restaurant is the fine dining option but only accepts children over eight so we were unable to have dinner here. The restaurant works on a concept of local and seasonal ingredients such as fish from local rivers and vegetables from the hotel’s own kitchen garden. We did however have breakfast in the beautiful traditional dining room with floor to ceiling windows and views of the garden.

The breakfast is a beautifully put together buffet with options to order hot food off the menu and plenty of food that Noah could eat.
We loved our little jaunt to the Montagu Arms it’s so cosy and the service was so welcoming and friendly plus the garden was an absolute highlight!
